Chapter 11--Operations with Roots

Essential Question:  How can we apply algebraic equations to geometric situation?

Unit Rationale:  Applying exponents and roots to problem solving allows us to solve situation involving distance, navigation, construction, and design.

As a result of this unit, students will be able to:

Ø  Simplify radical expressions, and explain the value of using the exact value vs an approximation

Ø  Use the Pythagorean Theorem or distance formula to solve problems modeled with right angles.

Vocabulary:

·        Distance formula

·        Hypotenuse

·        Legs of a right triangle

·        Pythagorean theorem

·        Radical expression

·        Right triangle

Standards: Standards will be assessed on both the state and classroom levels, however, standards with an asterisk (*) in the code will count for graduation requirements.

Focus Standards:

*A1.2.C  Interpret and use integer exponents and square and cube roots, and apply the laws and properties of exponents to simplify and evaluate exponential expressions.

Supporting Standards:

A1.2.D  Determine whether approximations or exact values or real number are appropriate depending on the context, and justify the selection.

Reasoning, Problem Solving, and Communication Standards:

A1.8.F  Summarize mathematical ideas with precision and efficiency for a given audience and purpose.
